Report of the EurEta General Assembly 2001
by Graham Guest, Secretary-General
The Euro-Region of Basel was the venue for the 10th General Assembly of the European Higher Engineering and Technical Professionals Association (EurEta) on 16 June. The region was a significant meeting place for a pan-European organisation, spanning as it does areas of three countries: Switzerland, Germany and France.
Currently EurEta has eleven National Members, two National Members in Development and two Supporting Members, and one of the main themes of this meeting of the General Assembly was how the Association could most effectively evolve to become a strong and influential body representing higher technical professionals across Europe.
An action plan has been drawn up to promote EurEta more widely, to strengthen its links with like-minded organisations and relevant divisions of the European Commission, and to increase the number of National Members, Supporting Members and individual registrants. Consideration was also given to the provision of a range of services to registrants, including help with free movement throughout Europe and beyond, and support for continuing professional development (CPD).
The General Assembly took place to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Swiss Technologists Association and their symposium, it works, the theme of which was Technicians move the world how do they do that? EurEtas Secretary-General, Graham Guest, presented a paper at the symposium entitled Europe - Workplace for competent professionals with CPD.
The optimism of the General Assembly and the excitement of the symposium were combined with a note of sadness at the decision of Martin Eppler to resign as President of EurEta from the end of June 2001. Many people have been involved with EurEta since its inception, but it is Martin who has been largely responsible for turning EurEta from an idea into a fully functioning professional body; the General Assembly and all those connected with EurEta have much to thank him for. Martin was presented with writing equipment with a lifelong, worldwide guarantee - so his colleagues wish him a long life with plenty of travel!
Taking over from Martin Eppler as President is a fellow Swiss, Urs Keller, and Urs is looking forward to building on EurEtas firm foundations as a virtual organisation operating across all the countries of Europe.
